Another scientific scare based on lies

The blood discussion reminded me of another issue where the scientists lied to the public.

AIDS is primarily a disease that affects homosexuals and drug users. This is a fact. Doctors knew this very early on. The odds of two healthy heterosexuals transmitting AIDS is very low.

In order to develop sympathy for AIDS victims and get millions in grant money for research, doctors lied to the public about the likelihood of heterosexual transmission of the disease. There isn't much debate about this as the heterosexual epidemic predicted never occurred.

Those that question why scientists would lie about Man Made Global Warming need only to look at the AIDS scare to see why. Scientists are driven by the need for money and fame like everyone else. Even if they aren't the one lying, they often keep quiet about the truth rather than rock the boat and endanger the precious flow of grant money.

Maybe if we highlight more stories like this one we can get people to take scientist down from a pedestal and rank them right next to used car salesmen and Congressmen on the trust scale.

pedestal?

I didn't know we (me and millions of other scientists) were on one. Nobody treats me with deference because of the way I look at the world. (Progressives do treat me like a car salesman because I'm conservative, but not because I experiment to learn about the world). Why would you suggest I be treated with contempt because some radical assholes lied and manipulated data? As usual, your attempt to stimulate angry discourse probably misrepresents your real feelings...you never meet good and honest scientists in your line of work?

I've met tons

They all work in the private sector. You may not know but I worked with grad students at the U and got a glimpse of the grant game, it's not pretty.

Too many common sense Americans swoon when they hear "scientists say..." They need to know that scientists are as venal and fallible as their dry cleaner. Any pronouncement that adds to the cost of the average American's life needs to be looked at very closely for bias, politics and conflicts of interest. For the last 2 decades there has been millions of dollars available for scientists interested in proving MMGW and almost no money for those wanting to disprove it. If you wanted paid work, you needed to be proving MMGW. This skewed the science so far to the left that bold faced lies were passed off as fact with hardly a peep from the scientific community.

Now that the MMGW lie is being exposed for the political hack job it always was, all scientists must atone for the sins of their brethren. I know tons of scientists winced when they saw Al Gore's movie, but most of then shrugged it off and let the lies stand. Non-profit science is foul with liberalism. Until it cleans house and gets religion about following the truth and not the politics, it will be viewed with the suspicion that it has earned.

And that tirade was just ained at the hard sciences, don't even get me started about the soft sciences. Do you deny that AIDS was intentionally sold as a threat to middle America to get them to cough up money they otherwise wouldn't have if they had been told the truth?

The cure for AIDS

If we were serious about curing AIDS, we'd deal with it the same way we dealt with Tuberculosis.

Nonsense. The disease has infected a growing number of heterosexuals, particularly in the black community, and in some regions heterosexual contact is the primary transmission mode. Recent estimates are that about 3% of Washington DC residents are HIV-positive. It's also estimated that over 1 million U.S. citizens are afflicted, but nobody knows for sure because it can take years for the symptons to surface. It's way too early to say we've
avoided a heterosexual epidemic.

"The disease has infected a growing number of heterosexuals, particularly in the black community"

That is because so many black men engage in buggery in prison, then bring it home to their beotches....the primary cause is still homosexual contact.

"and in some regions heterosexual contact is the primary transmission mode."

Well, we can be sure Odin's not engaging in gay sex right now, 'cause he pulled that right out of his ass.

"..but nobody knows for sure because it can take years for the symptons to surface."

Right...and the PC police have made it easy for infected persons to deny and expose others.

DC is a poor example
written by Barthélemy Barbancourt , March 05, 2010

Drug use in the district is rampant as well as prostitution (homosexual and hetrosexual). DC also has a large black population and they participate in a wide variety of risky activities like unprotected sex, drug use and poor health maintenance. These cultural issues increase their exposure to AIDS.

There is also the issue of health. AIDS transfers much more easily heterosexually if there are other health problems. STD's with open sores increase the probability of transmission.

Africa is often held up as the example a of hetrosexual AIDS epidemic, but there are other diseases that are assisting in transmission.

The reality is that AIDS is a relatively minor threat to healthy middle class Americans. It also has zero threat to monogamous married couples.

Bart, you sound more and more like a raving Muslim extremist every day. All scientists are evil, all are corrupt, everyone's in league with homosexuals. Academics are worthless parasites, drug addicts should be left to die in the streets (unless they were soldiers). Holy crap. Get some help, man. I used to think it was outrageous and funny. It's getting kinda sick. Go buy yourself a new toy of some kind and feel better.

Not all scientists
written by Barthélemy Barbancourt , March 05, 2010

Just the ones that suck off the government teat at liberal institutions.

So you are defending Michael Mann and his discredited Hockey Stick graph? You think James Hanson should be allowed to use his job at NASA as a pulpit to spread propaganda?

As for the AIDS scare do I need to dig up the infection rates for middle class whites vs homosexuals? The case that AIDS was going to be a heterosexual problem was way over blown intentionally so that people would fund the research for a completely avoidable disease.

As for drug addicts, I explained that MN is going broke. We have to allocate our scarce tax dollars to those most deserving. I'd prefer that children get fed and educated before we support junkies. With a $1 billion deficit this year (a bonding year) and a $5 billion deficit looming we really do have to start making hard choices. I also laid out $1.4 billion in savings that would hit the middle class as well as the poor. Cutting GAMC is an easy choice given our fiscal state.

People don't respect politicians and bankers because they don't police themselves. We are now finding the the scientists that live off our tax dollars put politics and grant money ahead of the science. Government funded science should also be examined in these budget conscious times. I think there is room for cuts there too. Why should the people of the USA or MN pay people to lie to them?
